ARA integrates Open5GS with Ericsson RAN to deliver a flexible, high-performance 5G research platform as part of the NSF-funded PAWR program.

The Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) Project Office announces a collaboration between PAWR platform POWDER and industry innovator Mavenir to test a first-of-its-kind O-RAN 5G SA network deployment with millimeter Wave (mmWave) spectrum. The solution is powered by Mavenir’s open radio unit (O-RU), open distributed unit (O-DU), open centralized unit (O-CU), and 5G core. The team has successfully completed “first call” with the setup and is prepared to begin extensive testing and evaluation against a variety of user devices.

Three winners are taking home $8,000 in competition prizes in the AFAR challenge. This is first in a series of new drone competitions that AERPAW will host.

The new funding aligns with rising global interest in wireless research facilities and underscores the value of programs that expand researcher access to sophisticated and adaptive network testing environments.

PAWR announces the general availability of the AERPAW wireless testbed for network communications and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) research. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, the AERPAW – or Aerial Experimentation and Research Platform for Advanced Wireless – testbed is designed to accelerate the integration of UAS into the national airspace and enable research into advanced wireless technologies supporting dynamic, mobile, and airborne networks.
