Thanks to US Ignite’s Smart Transportation Testbed program funded and supported by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Fort Carson piloted its first automated shuttle operating on-site in 2021.
The route planned for the Mountain Express was identified after multiple site visits to Fort Carson. The route included multiple facilities – barracks, post exchange, commissary, fitness center. While the routed area included several desirable stops, it also presented challenging intersections and heavily trafficked roadways.
The Mountain Express Automated Shuttle Project demonstrated the use of an AV shuttle to provide transportation services to soldiers on a fixed route to select facilities. Through this pilot, the research and implementation goals of the DoD were significantly advanced.
