US Ignite Community –

US Ignite is pleased to invite you to join us at the 6th Annual US Ignite Application Summit, March 27-29 in Kansas City, Missouri. The Summit will take place at the Kansas City Convention Center and once again will be co-located with the Smart Cities Connect Conference and Expo.

We have a host of exciting presentations and demonstrations planned for this year’s Application Summit. New this year is a plenary panel discussion that includes both researchers and community partners supported by the National Science Foundation’s Smart and Connected Community program. Also added to this year is a summit-wide focus on the importance of sustaining smart community efforts beyond their initial launch.

A preliminary agenda for the US Ignite Application Summit and the co-located Smart Cities Connect Conference and Expo is now available on the Smart Cities Connect website—take a look to see all the summit has to offer this year! Just a few things on this year’s docket are:

  • Meeting face-to-face with an estimated 1,800 innovators, including forward-thinking representatives from US Ignite’s Smart Gigabit Communities network.
  • Spotlighting Kansas City, the Summit will showcase the collaboration between industry, academia and government that is the calling-card of Kansas City, a US Ignite Smart Gigabit Community and the first IEEE Smart Cities Initiative Core City in North America.
  • Welcoming US Ignite’s newest Smart Gigabit Communities, including Eugene-Springfield, Oregon; Lexington; Kentucky; Lincoln, Nebraska; Red Wing, Minnesota; and San Francisco Bay Area, California.
  • Collaborating with Smart Gigabit Communities, including NC Next Generation Network, and exploring the ways we’ve seen advanced networking technologies help build the foundation for smart communities.
  • Experiencing first-hand learning about the economic development activity seen in smart communities, including Smart City Chattanooga, one of the New York Times 52 Places to Go in 2018—thanks in part to a metro-wide fiber network.

Additionally, the US Ignite Application Summit will include an estimated 35 advanced demos, including:

  • Just In Time VR:  Kenneth Smith, Ph.D., Director Virtual Reality & Technologies, Texas State University will demonstrate the use of virtual reality as a lower cost alternative to training public safety teams on complex and expensive equipment to be better prepared for mass casualty events.  Expense and limited access to equipment such as the Ambulance Bus has restricted the level of training local response teams can acquire prior to an event. This project allows localities to gain virtual experience in operating the equipment so that they are prepared to serve the community if an event were to occur.
  • Remote Deep Brain Stimulation: Christopher Butson, Ph.D., Director of Neuromodulation Research at the University of Utah will demonstrate a unique way to deliver high quality medical treatment options to residents in rural communities for the treatment of essential tremors. Previously, patients would be faced with the reality of having to relocate near an urban medical center for treatment. Using implanted sensors and high-speed networks, doctors can now treat their patients remotely in their community, with the assistance of a local physician.
  • AR Overlays of Underground Infrastructure: Dryver Huston, Ph.D., Professor of Engineering, University of Vermont and Dalei Wu, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Computer Science, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will demonstrate augmented reality (AR) visualization of underground infrastructure mapped using their innovative ground-penetrating radar.
