US Ignite is a nonprofit that spurs the creation of next-generation applications and services that leverage advanced networking technologies to build the foundation for smart communities. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), US Ignite’s Smart Gigabit Communities program is a network of 25 communities, each committed to accelerate the development and deployment of next-generation, gigabit applications and services for public benefit and to drive local innovation economies.
Cox Communications and US Ignite partnered and invited the City of San Diego to be the 20th designated Smart Gigabit Community that was announced on May 15, 2017 (https://www.us-ignite.org/news/san-diego-to-become-a-us-ignite-smart-gigabit-community/). Cox Communications provided a three-year grant period for improving the quality of life of metro San Diego citizens. US Ignite, in partnership with Cox Communications and the City of San Diego, is seeking a local organization to assist in implementing the grant in San Diego over the next two years. The grant will be disbursed and managed by US Ignite.
The overall goal of the project is to empower San Diego’s innovation community by providing the needed support and infrastructure to develop at least four smart gigabit applications that address local needs, such as, but not limited to: infrastructure, workforce development, public safety, education and community health.
